Conductor: Mikica Jevtić Narrators: Árpád Csernik and Mikica Jevtić At this year’s Festival, the SSO will present Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67 by Sergei Prokofiev, one of the best-known works of musical literature written for children. In this unusual musical fairy tale, each character has their own distinctive musical voice: Peter is represented by the strings, the Bird by the flute, the Duck by the oboe, the Cat by the clarinet, Grandfather by the bassoon, and the Wolf by the French horns. The Hunters are recognizable by the sound of the wind instruments and timpani, while the full orchestra creates the atmosphere of the story – from a peaceful morning and playful moments to excitement, danger and a happy ending. In this way, children are introduced to the instruments of the orchestra while discovering how music can evoke character, movement and emotion. For the SSO, an encounter with its youngest audience is about more than a concert performance. It’s an opportunity for children to peek into the world of the orchestra, become familiar with its instruments and discover that classical music is neither distant, nor inaccessible - but alive, playful, witty and full of imagination.
